Purely hypothetical, there’s no way in hell I’m buying it, just curious whether a diesel wagon catches anyone’s interest. Sure looks nice, shame it’s an auto.
Don’t see 5 cylinder engines every day.

A 40-year-old loaner? That seems crazy on multiple levels.

I want to say cp, but I don’t know what the market is for these . I sure wouldn’t kick that car out of my garage, though.

I had a 1985 300CD with a 5 cylinder turbo diesel. It wasn’t fast, but it was insistent. It just kept pulling. I also had a 1987 300D with the 6 cylinder turbo diesel. The 87 was a nicer car in most ways and the engine was nicer and smoother, but not by a huge margin. The wagons, in non rusty state, go for fairly good money and $14k doesn’t sound crazy to me.

Minty fresh, good color, low miles, and a turbo diesel wagon? I don’t think it is NP or CP, just... appropriate price for the right buyer. Too high and automatic to temp me, but hot damn an excellent example someone will snap up for sure. Wonder why it isn’t on BaT?

These, but with like 250k mi, sell on BaT for 7 or 8k, provided they’re perfect otherwise. So he’s definitely not off the mark here, but you could talk him down a bit.

My friend’s dad had the s edan version of this car, same color and all. My friend had a 300D sedan, the non-turbo version and it was a dog! But lots of fun memories in that car.

Yeah. Look up “indestructible” on Wiki... you see a pic of that car in the margin.
W123 with the 5-cylinder diesel. Few cars live up to the “designed to run a million miles” claim. This one did.

It’s toward the high end, but not crazy... assuming the engine doesn’t have too much blow-by.
These things were so reliable people (looking at you Bill Gates...) forgot to change the oil. It’s the only sure way to kill one.

Or you could do what my uncle did back in the ‘80s and put in a huge fuel tank so he could buy cheap diesel in Mexico. Despite being an engineer he didn’t take into consideration the much higher level of sulfur in the Mexican fuel, and it basically ate his engine from the inside out. Oops - so much for saving money when you have to replace an engine in a Mercedes...

Heh. Yeah. It’s funny how even “fastidious engineers” can have a blind spot when it comes to pinching nickels.
there’s a “retired telecomm engineer” who keeps a couple of nice planes out here at the airport. He scored a great deal on some “premium” 98 Octane pump gas... which was cool, but notably NOT 100LL av gas. He was burning the pump gas in his daily flights out in the desert... until one day... engine seizes, emergency landing... bump bump.
A&P guy opens up engine to find lumps of alloy where pistons used to be. Oops. $20K for engine replacement.
He saved, maybe, $200 on Avgas.
Smart people sometimes do the dumbest shit.

Not a bargain, and I am in awe of this weird planet where “Florida car” is something to brag about, but if it is as nice as it looks, it is fair. With the condition of the interior plastic and that includes the original switchgear hangtags, I believe the car has been cared for. Try to knock 10% off, and be happy.
For anyone bemoaning the 5-speed - these don’t exist in TD wagon form from the factory from any market.

They’ve got that one, and the next gen in a similar color. I have only been loaned the newer of the two. inde #2 lends out a dinan tuned 335. My wife got a speeding ticket 35 seconds after he gave her the keys and told her to be cool.

My uncle was essentially a traveling salesman in the medical devices industry and racked up ridiculous miles every year and he lived near San Diego, so the basic idea was sound. But like most of us, he probably made the assumption that laws and standards were the same even between the countries, an easy thing to do when you’re separated by just a handful of miles . Heck, I probably would have made the same assumption. I would have to ask myself the reason why it’s so much cheaper, especially when you take out taxes, but in the pre-Internet days this information was not so easy to come across.

We do rallies down in Baja a couple of times a year— usually cross at the Mesa or, better still, Tecate. You always fill BEFORE crossing over and try to plan your next fill so you never are running a majority of PEMEX’ finest in your tank.
A pal with a nice custom 911 forgot one year, ran down the coast to Ensenada almost on empty. He wheels into the first PEMEX you spot on the coast road... fills to the brim...
and it can hardly start, much less idle. Thankfully his PCM tuning was good enough that after a few minutes of stalling, starting and nursing it... it did finally idle as the engine computer adjusted mix and timing enough so it could run to get to the hotel.
Standards are still different down there.

Ok, they don’t loan the older of the two anymore, it’s their parts hauler. A/C is fucked in the E46 so I had to call em anyway and asked.

I don’t know the market for these but that’s gotta be CP in my eyes. I love that body style but the turbo diesel is merely “very slow” compared with the “excruciatingly slow” of the non turbo diesel.
I like slow cars you can drive fast but that isn’t one of them.

Well the TDs are worth a bit in well maintained shape, I’ve seen really decent TDs in CA go for $15k . My friend’s mom had that exact car in the 80's, I rode in it a lot. I would give up my sedan for a wagon that was maintained . They do live forever if you maintain them and they will keep going for a long time if you don’t.

It’s in i ndiana so “fl orida car” = “not completely rusted out”

I guess rust is more difficult than hurricane damage or being used a mobile meth lab/bath salts factory that might be common on FL cars.
